Aegon the Conqueror’s family tree
Three siblings, three dragons and about sixteen hundred men took a continent in two years. Everything else on this site descends from them.
The first four generations
Aegon sits between both of his sisters, because that is literally how the marriage worked.

The three of them
Visenya
Eldest. Rode Vhagar.
The one who carried Dark Sister and wore mail. She founded the Kingsguard, and after Aegon died she was widely suspected of poisoning his heir to put her own son on the throne.
Aegon
Middle. Rode Balerion.
Married both sisters, took six kingdoms, then spent thirty six years quietly administering them. He melted a thousand surrendered swords into a chair specifically designed to be uncomfortable.
Rhaenys
Youngest. Rode Meraxes.
The one he loved, and the one who kept singers and poets at court. She was killed over Dorne in 10 AC when a scorpion bolt took Meraxes through the eye.
From the Doom to the Iron Throne
- 114 BC
The family leaves Valyria
Daenys the Dreamer foresees the Doom. Lord Aenar Targaryen sells everything and moves the household, its wealth and five dragons to Dragonstone.
- 102 BC
The Doom of Valyria
The Fourteen Flames erupt and the Freehold is destroyed. House Targaryen is the only dragonlord family left alive, because they had already gone.
- 2 BC
Aegon lands
Aegon, Visenya and Rhaenys come ashore at the mouth of the Blackwater with three dragons and roughly sixteen hundred men.
- 2 BC
Harrenhal burns
Balerion roasts King Harren the Black in the tallest tower of the largest castle in Westeros. House Hoare ends in a night.
- 2 BC
The Field of Fire
All three dragons fly together against the combined Lannister and Gardener host of fifty five thousand. Four thousand men burn. House Gardener is extinguished.
- 1 AC
Torrhen Stark kneels
The King in the North surrenders at the Trident rather than see the North burn, and becomes Warden of the North.
- 1 AC
Aegon is crowned
Anointed by the High Septon in the Starry Sept at Oldtown. The maesters date the calendar from this day.
- 1 AC
Dorne refuses
Princess Meria Martell sends back a single line: unbowed, unbent, unbroken. Dorne stays independent for another one hundred and eighty six years.
What he left behind
Two sons by two different sisters, which turned out to be exactly the wrong number. Aenys, Rhaenys’s son, was gentle and indecisive, and his reign collapsed into the Faith Militant uprising. Maegor, Visenya’s son, took the throne from his nephew, broke the Faith by force, married six times and died on the Iron Throne with his own wrists opened.
The dynasty was only saved because Aenys’s son Jaehaerys turned out to be the best king the family ever produced. He ruled fifty five years, made peace with the Faith, and left thirteen children. Two generations later his succession arrangements caused the Dance of the Dragons.
Aegon the Conqueror questions
Who were Aegon the Conqueror’s wives?
Both of his sisters. Visenya, the elder, whom he wed for the dynasty, and Rhaenys, the younger, whom he wed because he wanted to. All three rode dragons and all three fought in the Conquest.
Who were Aegon the Conqueror’s children?
Two sons who reached the throne. Aenys I by Rhaenys, born 7 AC, and Maegor the Cruel by Visenya, born 12 AC. Maegor took the crown from his nephew and left no living heirs.
What dragon did Aegon the Conqueror ride?
Balerion the Black Dread, the largest dragon ever ridden and the only one in Westeros that had seen Valyria before the Doom. Balerion’s fire forged the Iron Throne.
Why did the Targaryens leave Valyria?
Daenys Targaryen dreamed of the Doom twelve years before it came. Her father Lord Aenar believed her, sold the family holdings and moved everyone to Dragonstone in 114 BC. It is the only reason the house exists.
How long did Aegon’s Conquest take?
About two years, from the landing in 2 BC to the coronation at Oldtown in 1 AC. He took six of the seven kingdoms. Dorne held out and only joined the realm by marriage in 187 AC.
Is Daenerys descended from Aegon the Conqueror?
Yes, fourteen generations down, through Aenys I, Jaehaerys I, Baelon, Viserys I, Rhaenyra, Viserys II and the kings who followed.
